Happy Halloween!!
A group of witches invited people to a bookstore in Brooklyn on October 20th (yesterday) to participate in a public hexing of Brett Kavanaugh. The event description explained the purpose:
"Please join us for a public hex on Brett Kavanaugh and upon all rapists and the patriarchy which emboldens, rewards and protects them. We will be embracing witchcraft’s true roots as the magik of the poor, the downtrodden and disenfranchised and it’s history as often the only weapon, the only means of exacting justice available to those of us who have been wronged by men just like him."
The political right was all up in arms about it. Tucker Carlson of Fox News complained that 25% of the group's donations would go to Planned Parenthood to "help them continue to fund their human sacrifice rituals". Amy Kremer of Women Vote Trump PAC explained on an MSNBC roundtable: "It is a scary time right now. Sarah Sanders has been run out of restaurants. I mean, there's a list of things going on. Now you’ve got witches that are placing a hex on Brett Kavanaugh." The group's Facebook page was flooded with comments claiming that the event was an affront to Christianity, such as "Kavanaugh is a Christian. True Christians have the protection of our heavenly father against others that desire a demon attack against them." The event was vocally protested by Christian fundamentalists. Which was hilarious to watch on YouTube. There would appear to still be something about witchcraft that terrifies the adherents of more genuinely monstrous faiths.
Honestly, I find the whole thing kind of funny. And sad. We can't do anything about Brett Kavanaugh being a Supreme Court Justice now, but at least there was this impotent cathartic thing that happened. While I cannot believe in Wicca as a matter of intellectual honesty, it's fun and satisfying stuff like this that makes me want to. Wicca is cool with me. They are on my side.
