Since the topic of whiteness has come up, here's an article I read recently: The Myth of Whiteness in Classical Sculpture: "Greek and Roman statues were often painted, but assumptions about race and aesthetics have suppressed this truth. Now scholars are making a color correction."
Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire. ― Gustav Mahler
Not nearly as poorly defined as race is.
The fact that they can successfully interbreed with one another necessarily raises the question as to whether or not they actually constitute a different species, which is why there is an ongoing debate within scientific circles as to whether or not homo sapiens and Neanderthals really were separate species or whether or not we require a new taxonomic designation like subspecies. So while there is admittedly some ambiguity surrounding the concept of speciation, it at least lends itself to objective, consistent analysis. Nothing of the sort can be said with regards to race. There is no question that different species can in fact breed provided they are closely related. Just thought that was interesting.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.

No, the question it immediately raises is one of how a species is defined. If you cared to look, you'd realize there is a debate about exactly how a species can or should be defined. The concept is flawed. Do you care? Of course not.
There is also a great deal of debate about about the validity and usefulness of race. Of course that debate is more about politics than science but it's funny how you will attack one ambiguous term while supporting another. All in the name of science, I'm sure.

Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

I appreciate the fact that the concept of species came up because, like race, the definition and utility of the concept of species is more a function of who you ask than anything else.

It's funny that you think I'm not aware of this. It's even funnier that you think the mere existence of a debate over a scientific term somehow implies that the term is "poorly defined". Scientists are debating the definition of an atom, too. Does that mean the concept of an atom is poorly defined? Of course not. 99% of the time, the working definition for these terms is clear and consistent. And in the rare instances where an ambiguity arises, scientists work that ambiguity out using an objective and consistent methodology. The same cannot be said for race.
One is far more ambiguous than the other. And one has a way of resolving that ambiguity that involves a clear, consistent, and logical framework, whereas the other does not. I'm sure you can see the difference. There is also a great deal of debate about about the validity and usefulness of race. Of course that debate is more about politics than science but it's funny how you will attack one ambiguous term while supporting another. All in the name of science, I'm sure.
