Dirty staff, no doubt. Along with visitors who refuse to wash their hands. Hospitals kill.

Officials found some hand-washing deficiencies at the Wanaque Center during visits last week, and were working with the facility on infection-control issues, the health department said.
Adenoviruses frequently cause mild to severe illness with cold-like symptoms, particularly in young children. The infection can cause other illnesses, including pneumonia, diarrhea and bronchitis.

The less time you spend in a hospital, the safer you are. Something like each day is a 1.67% increase in the risk of developing a nosocomial infection. That doesn't account for other factors, like compromised immune systems, ventilators, location (ICU versus a med or surg unit), so forth.

It doesn't help that people with common viruses go to the emergency room instead of just drinking water and resting, or going to a family physician. Recently, I felt bad for going to the hospital where I was diagnosed with the cold, but the lymph nodes in my neck were the size of golf balls and you could visibly see them and I freaked out. I did not really have any symptoms of a cold.
