THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Thirteen people including a sheriff's deputy and the gunman were killed in a shooting in a crowded bar here late Wednesday night, reports CBS Los Angeles. The shooter was found dead inside, authorities said.

The station said one person was seen -- apparently lifeless -- on the ground outside the bar's entrance.

Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters early Thursday the deputy died at a hospital.


He was identified as Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran a year away from retiring.

The suspected shooter was identified as 29 year-old Ian Long, a law enforcement official said, and he is believed to have used a legally-purchased .45-caliber pistol in the attack.

Heavily-tattooed gunman was 29, drove mother's car to bar before silently opening fire, source says



Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said the gunman was found dead inside the nightclub after the second wave of police arrived after Helus’ death.


Dean said it “appeared” that the gunman’s wound was self-inflicted and that he carried no form of identification.


Eyewitnesses said the gunman was dressed all in black and deployed smoke bombs before opening fire on the dance floor.


A law-enforcement source told the Los Angeles Times the gunman drove his mother’s vehicle to the bar.
