    Sad day...

Today we put our lovely 18-year-old little buddy down. He was in fairly late stage doggy dementia and his life had become a struggle just to get up on his feet. If I didn't hand feed him, he wouldn't eat. He just walked in circles and tried to jam himself into corners and small spaces. It's so hard to say goodbye, but we couldn't keep watching him suffer, no longer knowing where he was anymore, constantly falling down and howling. I can hear and feel his absence in the house. It's grimly quiet even with the TV on. We've always had two dogs, but for the last few years, we've only had one. This is the first time in over 30 years that we haven't had a dog in the house. It feels wrong.

Sorry to hear such sad news. As a dog owner which is an integral part of our family I can only imagine the loss you must feel. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Sorry for your loss. It's truly like losing a family member...actually, it is losing a family member.

Thank's Common. I've had many dogs over the years, but it never gets any easier to say goodbye. Their little lives are too short and doing the best thing for them is always so difficult, yet I am sure that we will eventually get another little friend because they are pure love wrapped in fur...

It totally is losing a family member. They aren't big conversationalists, but they communicate very well, on a different more emotional level. Sometimes I think that they are telepathic.

Thanks Gamewell. It is the circle of life. When we get that little puppy we know that all too soon we will have to say goodbye, but having them is better than not having them.

I understand what you mean. My cat died last November from a liver disease. The house just became different somehow even though cats don't make much noise. The place just seemed empty.

Thanks Pete. Yes, he lived a good long and very healthy life. He never once even needed a vet until last April when he had a tooth infection.
