Why we need less college and more reality?

This is a subject I've discussed before with several of my FB friends. My current occupation with the NFTA has me convinced more than ever that vocational/ trades careers are not being emphasized enough in the schools because in my opinion it's always "college this and college that". Has been since even before I was a senior some 32 years ago. And that is doing a disservice to our people. No wonder why the building trades are in such high demand right now-shortage of new apprentices to bring up in the ranks. NFTA is experiencing a driver shortage, as is all student, transit, and motorcoach companies/agencies. For example, even with my class and the next two classes behind me, there won't be enough drivers to cover the extra board for very long. Again, if a 19-21 year old has his/her license, that person can easily turn a 35-40 year career and not be saddled with tens of thousands of dollars in college loan debt and a worthless degree. I'm not knocking college, there are fields that require a degree, but why push it as the end all to a better life?

Yes, with a degree, you learn a lot about the theory of money. This overlaps onto laws, and humanities too, creating a settled environment, and, a clear one that functions without the problems of licenses and regulations interfering. So, learning about these things is important.

Problem is, people are just learning words on a page! If they were to turn in projects, essays and speculation, they would really understand. This would be where the student is involved in actually trying their techniques and, finding structure for them, of course.

Yes we should have more trade and vo-tech schools- and get ride of the fluff at university.

Here there is a large vo-tech high school where students can focus on a trade but get other courses that traditional high schools offer.

Around here, if you get the proper certificates in welding and work hard after 7 years or so you can make six-figures.

College isn’t for everybody. We need tradespeople. Desperately.

It takes far longer to learn to become a Master Plumber or Master Electrician and it takes far more knowledge than it does to have a BA or a BS and their licensing test is far harder than any finals ever were.

I need a new faucet installed more than I need to know who wrote a bigoted paper in 1972.
" I'm old-fashioned. I like two sexes! And another thing, all of a sudden I don't like being married to what is known as a 'new woman'. I want a wife, not a competitor. Competitor! Competitor!" - Spencer Tracy in 'Adam's Rib' (1949)

Art thou every retard among us related to thine uncle or mistress by way of moral or illegitimate rendezvous? Thus, we are one side of the other's coin by luck or pluck. - Jimmyz

Liberals want everyone to go to college so they can indoctrinate them, then they can clean their toilets
