This example from the Cambridge English Dictionary may help -
https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dic...lish/socialismsocialism noun
uk /ˈsəʊ.ʃəl.ɪ.zəm/ us /ˈsoʊ.ʃəl.ɪ.zəm/
the set of beliefs that states that all people are equal and should share equally in a country's money, or the political systems based on these beliefs
socialism noun

You are an American, and it is understandable that you are familiar with the American definition. But the word socialism does mean other things.
