It depends on the form that the socialism takes. If it takes on the form of democratic socialism, then it doesn't have to be violent. But in order for it to be democratic and nonviolent, it must be very localized. In other words, small scale socialism is something that could work peacefully. However, the larger it becomes, the more authoritarian it has to be in order to maintain its socialist character.

People have a right to be wary of socialist ideologues who try to push their ideology through national governments. The history of large-scale socialism is utterly atrocious when it comes to things like economic prosperity and human rights. So when Democrats try to push their socialist policies at the national scale in the USA, it is indeed worrisome. Nationalized socialism at that scale can only work in the context of a highly authoritarian government. Naturally, Democrats themselves are not worried about the negative aspects of an authoritarian, socialist government, as they envision themselves administrating it. They love the idea of having that kind of power over American society. It thrills them.

That sounds like arguing true socialism just hasn't been tried. Once you do away with private property, the only way to decide disputes is with a strong, central government that exercises a monopoly on the violent use of force when the people act with any liberty.

If it is so small scale, it it socialism? The communists insisted it must be universal, the Germans national. A small group of farmers could pool money to a granary but would maintain it and distribute profits by contract but it that truly socialism?
