    5 world defining historical battles

    5 WORLD DEFINING HISTORICAL BATTLES

We have a few threads out there hand-wringing over war, yet war is part of the human condition. And the world we live in was shaped by wars. This article highlights 5 battles that defined our world:

We take certain things in history for granted: Western civilization’s ancient Greek origins, Rome’s stunning domination of the world for hundreds of years or the democracies which have sprung up all over the world etc.

But the things that seem natural now in retrospect (ancient Greek city-states’ progressive concepts, Rome’s pragmatism and efficiency which also translated to the military plane, democracy’s widespread adoption), might not have happened at all!

    2. THE BATTLE OF PHARSALUS, 48 BC

    3. THE BATTLE OF TOURS/BATTLE OF POITIERS, 732 AD

    4. THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS, 1066 AD

    5. THE SIEGE OF VIENNA, 1529

What would be the four or five country-altering battles for the USA? I recently read The Battle of New Orleans. Great Book.

It would likely include Yorktown, the Battle of New Orleans, the best Civil War battle that lead to Appomattox, I would pick a battle from the Spanish American War since that is the point the US became a world power, and then a WWII battle that won the war and made the US a superpower.

The Battle of Mazar-i-Sharif Afghanistan SF ODA -595.....The Horse Soldiers. 12 Strong was the movie they made about it.

First to Fight in Afghanistan. Took the 4th Largest City with 200 Afghan fighters, 12 Green Berets and some Afghan Militia fighters, against 50k Al Qaida and Taliban. It is consider the worst defeat of AQ and they wont ever forget it.

ODA 555 was the other SF team sent into Afghanistan at the time. Although they inserted in East Afghanistan and were not part of the battle at Mazar-i-Sharif.

Gettysburg should be one. It ended any hope of the South becoming independent.

WWII alone had many battles that if the outcome had been different, would have changed our world today.

    The Normandy Invasion,
    Stalingrad
    The Battle of the Bulge
    Kursk

CIA's SAG was in the horse cavalry charge as well. They were in country to great ODA 595 when they arrived. SAG actually got the Americans western style saddles for the horses.

A great man. Too bad his war had no significance on the world stage.

Hand-wringing over war is also part of the human condition. And I daresay, it's one of the few things about the human condition that isn't shameful. The sad truth is, much of war is needless, cruel, and in the service of a few at the expense of the many. So while I certainly appreciate the historical import of war and its study, I view it as a sordid business that should be strictly minimized whenever possible.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.
    --John Adams
