    Check out how capitalism works. The specifics are there. If big oil paid the full cost of production , alternate energy sales would have increased because oil prices would have increased. = Capitalism
    Spurred on by the sales and money research would naturally make improvements more quickly in order to gain even more market share. = Economies of scale etc.= Capitalism.
    Now I get why you are confused because oil and energy are not free markets . But if they were , as they should be, what I have spelled out are the most likely results.
    For example if the government had subsidized the horse, the auto would of taken much longer to gain market share.
