I would never agree with Conservative opposition to state helping people in need.

Conservatives, largely, do believe the state should help people in need. The question is how best to do that. Also, conservatives give a lot more in charity that others do.

But conservatives believe in helping them in a way which will teach them how to earn their way to a more independent, fulfilling and prosperous life.

Agree. And do love you brother.

But can you stop with the perpetual bold in your posts?? Feels like you're always yelling at everybody.

That is the juncture point where i think Conservatives versus Liberals provide a nice balance.

Conservatives can be compassionate but they lean a little more to the cynical side. Liberals can certainly be cynical but are more compassionate by nature/default.

There is a wide spectrum of those in this country who reach out for assistance. Some genuinely needy. Others more to the lazy side looking for handouts and easy pickings. For any large society it becomes a challenge to find a charitable/benevolent balance which is economically viable.

Those on the fringes, and those just in the game to scream at the opposition and cheer indiscriminately for "their side", make a lot of noise - especially lately - and certainly they make the news, but I still think they're the minority.

On this forum, especially, I think one of the things that might serve to mask this reality is the mischaracterization of certain members by certain other members. Time and time again I have seen a member who expresses a traditionally liberal or conservative position on one or two issues labeled, pigeonholed and dismissed as a fringe partisan nutcase by certain other members. It's a lazy strategy, but one that seems to appeal to a certain mentality. The reality is that most of us have a mixture of opinions and are not so partisan or doctrinaire that we can't acknowledge a good argument coming from "the other side". Sometimes the home town cheerleader mentality just takes over and drowns out what might have been a useful and enlightening discussion for all.

You have more faith in the voting public than I do. If their real beliefs get side tracked by the hype as you talk about, and as does happen then those beliefs aren't strong enough.
