Despite the OP's well-poisoning, I agree, politicians are in it for power and wealth. This is the primary problem with modern mass democracy. And despite the false hope of Just AnotherPerson that there are good politicians to be found, there aren't, for it's the system itself that is corrupting. Midcan points to the real problem with this system, it affects society right down to the individual. The political system we have has removed all intermediary community relationships and authorities that used to protect the people from the state, keep it from creating self-serving laws. The solution is simple but not easy: Invert the power struction from top-down centralized government to bottom-up local government.

Well what you are saying is exactly what they want us to think, that way we wont figure it out, and make things right. They want us to not have hope. This is not false hope at all. It is the way our system works, and all we have to do is utilize it. The system is already in place it is here for us all. It is not false hope in any way. If everyone who could, participated we could change this nation. This is no joke. Also there are good politicians. Tulsi gabbard has been a politician for a long time now and she is not corrupted. She may be young for a politician but she has been in it for a long time.

There are a few politicians who have signed the pledge to not take PAC money and that says a lot. If they are not being paid by the corporations then they wont be as corruptible and obligated to vote in their favor.

When the politicians realize that the people will not stand for corruption, and will not vote them in unless they vow to not take PAC money, then they will soon change their ways.

This is not false hope at all. We just have to make it happen that is all. As much as some want anarchy and to have a collapse of the system, that is a very bad idea. That could bring unrecoverable harm to our nation, it will not bring the desired result. Rather it will turn our nations into something comparable to the middle east. As it stands even with all of the corruption it is one of the best places in the world to live. We should not destroy life for millions just so we can see our ideals set in motion. We must consider the lives and happiness of all. There is a system in place and a democracy, and we can work to change what we don't like.
We are all brothers and sisters in humanity. We are all made from the same dust of stars. We cannot be separated because all life is interconnected.

With all its faults I cannot choose another country that I would like to be a citizen of so I'm stuck with the "one who brought me" to this dance.
" I'm old-fashioned. I like two sexes! And another thing, all of a sudden I don't like being married to what is known as a 'new woman'. I want a wife, not a competitor. Competitor! Competitor!" - Spencer Tracy in 'Adam's Rib' (1949)

Art thou every retard among us related to thine uncle or mistress by way of moral or illegitimate rendezvous? Thus, we are one side of the other's coin by luck or pluck. - Jimmyz

Your "they" has a name, you know, the US Government.

    Never heard of Tulsi Gabbard.

The aim of politicians is to keep us so divided we cannot stand up united against them. Did you know that up through feudal times, before kings decided they were above the people, the people when hardpressed would riot as a way to limit rulers. under the premise of individualism, whereby we've lost all community relationships and intermediary authorities that stood between the individual and the government, the people have lost that power. It will take a great deal more government failure for the people to unite and regain power.

I don't think we disagree in principle or even aim, just means. You still look to the government for solutions, empowering a corrupt system all the more.

How would it be any different for a third party candidate who won?

It will actually take time to build up 3rd parties in Congress. There is no fast or easy fix, but I lost faith in the two major parties over a decade ago.
