    Personally I see a great deal of immigration as a tool to depress the labor market on both ends and would like to see even legal immigration curtailed. But since we aren't going to do that legal would be preferable to illegal for reasons already stated.
    The only pathway to citizenship for an illegal should be a stiff fine, deportation. Then they can apply legally after 5 years (the typical waiting period with the legal process if you screw it up).
