I definitely don't advocate being rude or confrontational to an officer. That would just be beyond foolish. Not answering questions does not fall into the category of being rude or confrontational. It does, however, elicit rude and confrontational behaviour from police.

True, unfortunately. An officer may go many months or even years getting away with certain behaviors and practices, to the point where he believes that he's in the right just because no one has called him on it in so long, and he knows that other cops are doing it, too.

A lot of folks maintain a somewhat naïve view of how the police view them. There are exceptions, of course, but for the most part the day-to-day "cop mentality" isn't the police and law abiding citizens vs. the bad guys - it is very much the police vs. everybody who isn't a cop. If you think the average police officer looks at you as some kind of ally or friend, you're mistaken.

If you decline to answer questions on principle it often just comes across as having something to hide. I didn't create the 'rules' but humans generally jump to that conclusion when their questions are not answered, and it is not limited to cops. Try using "I legally don't have to tell you" to your mother or spouse sometime during a serious conversation and see how that goes.

Let's get real. There are many bad cops, but many many more good cops. Some of the dirt bags they have to deal with it's a wonder there are ANY good cops. Next time you need help try calling a dirt bag...

That's not the topic, but okay. I won't be calling dirt bags, cops or otherwise.

I don't disagree, but I am confused with the comparison of 'well, let's just throw the dog away because we ran out of water to give it a bath.'

It doesn't matter what not answering questions comes across as. Some stranger stops you on the street and starts interrogating you, do you feel obligated to provide them with answers to their questions?

Your post was an old-standby of there are good and bad cops. Which wasn't the topic question. The topic was a question of why do cops cop an attitude when questioning you if you don't answer them and you are within your legal rights to refuse to answer?

Why do you think they do this?
