One explanation of the date chosen is December 25 was the Christianising of the dies solis invicti nati (day of the birth of the unconquered sun), a popular holiday in the Roman Empire that celebrated the winter solstice as a symbol of the resurgence of the sun.

Again according to Britannica - "None of the contemporary Christmas customs have their origin in theological or liturgical affirmations, and most are of fairly recent date."

The practice of giving gifts, which goes back to the 15th century, contributed to the view that Christmas was a secular holiday focused on family and friends, and this was one of the reasons the Puritans who went to America banned the celebration of Christmas (together with the theatre, dancing, the book of common prayer, etc).

So it's probably not surprising that Christmas has become a mostly secular holiday (with loads of help from advertising and commercial interests).

And Easter smacks of a pagan "fertility rights of spring " holiday. Eggs, bunnies , etc.

It was. The Catholic Church hijacked all the Pagan holidays in order to avoid being boring, i.e., Bread and Circe.

Easter has absolutely nothing to do any pagan feast. I heard the graduation rates are low in your depressed region. I can believe it.

Ethereal wrote, "No true Christian would support this murderous empire. Those who defend it are like the servants of Rome."

    To which I replied, "
Was Rome, at any point in its history "Christian"?

I believe he was implying that no true Christian would support the US. Those who do are like those who defended Rome. I believe he meant the Roman's were not Christians. However, the last 150 years before Rome fell she was considered to be a Christian empire.

Now you tell me what Ethereal meant.

Oi! Don't do away with Chrissie presents - I want gifts. It's OK for you people with squillions of dollars/pounds/euros - but I don't have any money, so my birthday and Christmas are like quite a big deal for me. I'm hoping Father Christmas can fit a killer games rig into his bag (I've already seen the one I want, and have been throwing around wild hints for the past months). It's the only reason I put up with all the other **** at Christmas time.

What - me greedy and commercially minded? You bet!

It meant something to me when I was growing up. But now if I see something I want I get it. If I can't afford it, nobody is going to gift it to me anyway.
