Russia sends 2 nuclear-capable bombers to Venezuela

Russia sends 2 nuclear-capable bombers to Venezuela

Talk about provocation. But we do it to them too.

Two Russian nuclear-capable strategic bombers arrived in Venezuela on Monday, a deployment that comes amid soaring Russia-U.S. tensions.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said a pair Tu-160 bombers landed at Maiquetia airport outside Caracas on Monday following a 10,000-kilometer (6,200-mile) flight. It didn’t say if the bombers were carrying any weapons and didn’t say how long they will stay in Venezuela.

The ministry said a heavy-lift An-124 Ruslan cargo plane and an Il-62 passenger plane accompanied the bombers to Maiquetia.

The Tu-160 is capable of carrying conventional or nuclear-tipped cruise missiles with a range of 5,500 kilometers (3,410 miles). Such bombers took part in Russia’s campaign in Syria, where they launched conventionally-armed Kh-101 cruise missiles for the first time in combat.
Those nuclear tipped cruise missiles are one of the nuclear weapons that Russia has that violate the INF treaty- a treaty that Russia claims they are in compliance with.

But we shouldn't be worried about Russian spies trying to circumvent our democracy, or what role our POTUS has in being complicit in that circumvention....

Sure. We have plenty of threads on those. Only one thread about Russia sending nuclear capable bombers to Venezuela.

With regards to influence in others' elections- same same as the nuclear thing. Both sides do it.

We have Russian subs with nukes aboard a lot closer to us. Putin playing around IMO. Now if they placed a whole squadron there after taking over an airfield permanently my eyebrows would move north a bit more.

I’ll admit to being puzzled by this one. Usually I can see clear reasons for these moves, but I don’t see the benefit to Russia in this one. I guess it could be a test to see how the U.S. government responds.

The US is considering sending troops to stabilize the nation; perhaps the Russians think that this would block such a move. IMO we have no reason to get involved.

You only worry about these things when you don't like the POTUS.

Venezuela is a target of US "regime change" operations, so Russia's presence near Venezuela is meant as a deterrent and a warning.
