The company that publishes the National Enquirer admitted that it paid $150,000 in hush money to silence alleged mistresses of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump prior to the 2016 election, prosecutors said Wednesday.
The publisher, American Media Inc., will avoid prosecution by stipulating that it worked with Trump's campaign to buy the silence of women — who have identified themselves as adult film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal — ahead of the vote two years ago, prosecutors said.

The company that publishes the National Enquirer admitted that it paid $150,000 in hush money to silence alleged mistresses of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump prior to the 2016 election, prosecutors said Wednesday.
The publisher, American Media Inc., will avoid prosecution by stipulating that it worked with Trump's campaign to buy the silence of women — who have identified themselves as adult film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal — ahead of the vote two years ago, prosecutors said.

I thought this type of extortion and blackmail were legal as long as a lawyer was involved. Lots of cases are settled out of court with "gag order" clauses. In fact congress uses our money to pay off such accusations.
So unless the women were paid off with campaign finances , why does this matter?

The FEC will fine Trump if they do anything at all. That's it. No crime was committed. Obama paid a 350,000 dollar fine. It's not a big deal. It is nothing, but more liberal hysteria.

You don't need a lawyer to enter into a settlement agreement, although it is advisable.
