It is not currently possible to legally own an M4 carbine anywhere in the United States.
The Hughes Amendment to the Firearm Owners Protection Act banned the civilian ownership of all fully automatic firearms (legally considered “machine guns”) made after 1986

@exotix -- Apples / Oranges -- you are speaking "fully automatic" -- these are semi-automatic M4's. All AR-15's sold to us civilians are semi-automatic.

Actually, @exotix is absolutely correct in his statement. Purchasing an M-4 is illegal, however, the OP simply misspoke on what he purchased. A M-4 style AR-15 is what he correctly purchased. Not to nitpick, but when members berate others for calling a magazine a clip, or a semiautomatic an assault rifle, it is all fair game.
