This raises a question that has been brought up at other forums about the actual responsibilities of the police. The understanding is that the police aren't legally required to intervene in a dangerous situation or even to protect the public from danger. They aren't legally required to respond to a domestic disturbance, for example, or to a drug store heist, or to a burglary in progress or anything else that would risk their lives. They can stand down at any time they want. The only people they have any actual legal obligation to protect are officials in government.
