Well, we should probably start at the most fundamental level and work from there.
Essentially, "legitimate" and "rights" are abstractions. And because they are abstract, that can make them seem nebulous to a certain extent. Yet one could say the same thing about any abstraction, whether it be concepts pertaining to morality or basic number theory. The fact that ideas and abstractions are intangible can make them seem less "real" than objects which exist in the material world, yet nature has endowed humans with reason, which allows us to perceive and to comprehend these abstractions - a trait that is unique to us. To me, that is clear proof of their coherence, their greater purpose, and their truthfulness.
