Are you for or against the death penalty?

I have always been pro-death penalty, but have recently been questioning it. I still believe that some actions deserve death, but with the continued and extreme corruption of people in positions of power, how can anyone with a clear conscious put someone to death when there are doubts...

This documentary on Netflix is interesting. I haven't read Grisham's book, but have added it to my list for reading.

I was pro death penalty for the longest time but recently, over the last... 10 years maybe my standpoint shifted a bit. Not for religious reasons but more likely for my growing mistrust in the process. And maybe I don't believe in my heart that mankind is responsible and judgmental enough to issue this kind of sentence.

I believe there are crimes that are prime candidates for a death penalty. I also believe there are things worse than death.

Would it be fair to say that while I'm for the death penalty, I'm not so sure about the people and system that might hand down that sentence?

Haven't watched the documentary or read the book you mentioned, but I plan to watch the documentary.
    You are wrong about police.

    That's Tolkien's Catholicism talking.

Kind of a tangent but while growing up in the 80s my mother hated fantasy. It was all Satanic to her. Ironically, the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are Roman Catholic allegories.

Yes it is, LOTR is richly deep with Tolkien's Catholic upbringing, and his WWII service, the references to Nazi Germany and Sauron are notable.

I strongly recommended you read the books but I don't know if you ever did.

I have been opposed to the death penalty, with a few exceptions for many years. It has nothing to do with religion. I simply do not believe the state should have the power of life and death over the citizenry. I also do not like long prison sentences. I prefer the concept of exile.

The exceptions I make to the "No death penalty" are public officials, whether elected or appointed, who betray the public trust and their oaths of office. Then would come traitors, soldiers who engage in extreme breaches of military discipline. These would include desertion in the face of the enemy, perpetration of crimes like rape and murder against noncombatants.

I also believe that if the death penalty is invoked, sentence should be carried out by the person or persons most wronged by the criminal. It should also be done in some horrific manner, nothing sanitized or humane. It should also be public.

Was/is your mom Catholic? It's fascinating looking back at growing up and at what the adults at the time(s) believed... trying to scare us with beliefs of demonic or satanic leanings in music, games, stories, etc.

At probably 11 years old, there was a really bad wreck outside of the private school I attended. The teenagers involved died. Someone thought it would be a good teaching lesson on the evils of certain types of music and they played to us what the teens were listening to when they crashed. That was the first time I ever heard any kind of metal music, and I've loved it ever since. Ooops.

    This is awesome. Thank you.

Only one question - where should the location of exile be?

    100% opposed.
