    'Whats the best advice youve ever received?'

    A hard question? Complicated maybe? For me it was 'read', mom repeated it often. I'll leave other comments on topic until I see replies. Long or short or even confusing, let us know.

    Note: This was prompted by the TLS, a magazine I subscribed to long ago in paper format, now on the web. A few replies below.

    "When I crossed over from academic to popular writing, a university press editor advised me not to make the common professors mistake of talking down to readers, as if they were semi-literate chicken pluckers. Think of them, she said, as if they are as smart as you are, but happen not to know something that you know." Steven Pinker

    "Saw the wood that is in front of you." Or "watch your lane."

    The first means don't worry about stuff you have no control over.

    The second is a bit more intense. It refers to a fire team (or larger force) engaging the enemy. You kill what is in your lane and you trust your buddies to kill those in their lane knowing that if they don't you could be shot from someone not in your lane. That is some real trust.

    The best advice was from my father; when I was 16 he told me that in a few years I'd be able to work full time and said "if you wake up in the morning and are a garbageman and love waking up and going to work that's great; if you are an executive or lawyer or doctor and you dread waking up each morning and going to work, it's not worth it. Do what you love doing the most in life and just live according to your means" I followed his advice and entered a field that I really loved and looked forward to going to work everyday up to my retirement.

    My grandmother told me not to marry for love, but for money.

    I should have listened.

    No one owes you anything.
    Live below your means.
    Women enjoy sex just as much as men, never pay for it.
    Avoid paying interest. If something is worth buying, it's worth saving for.
    When your instincts say go, just kiss her.

    I've received great advice from so many people in my life from parents to bosses. Here are a few I remember vividly.

    * Always go forward
    * Own your mistakes
    * Nothing is free
    * Be compassionate and kind
    * You're worth it
    * It's okay to apologize
    I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.
