Mitch McConnell blocks House bills to reopen government

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday blocked two House-passed funding bills that would reopen the federal government.

Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.), surrounded by roughly two dozen of their Senate Democratic colleagues, tried to get consent to bring up a bill that would fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through Feb. 8, as well as a separate package that would fund the remaining agencies without current-year appropriations through Sept. 30.

But McConnell objected, arguing they would be “show votes” and saying that he and Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) made an "explicit commitment" to avoid such votes.

“The last thing we need to do right now is trade pointless — absolutely pointless — show votes back and forth across the aisle,” McConnell said.

Under Senate rules, any senator can try to force a vote or pass a bill, but any one senator can block them.

The attempt by Democrats to pass the House bills comes as the partial government shutdown, which is impacting roughly a quarter of the federal government and is in its 20th day, is poised to break a record this weekend as the longest shutdown ever.

Talks between congressional leadership and President Trump appear to have derailed, with Trump walking out of a White House meeting on Wednesday.

McConnell has pledged that he will not bring up a bill that Trump doesn’t support.

Schumer will respond if this is not true. Assuming it is true it is reasonable. These short term continuing resolutions have gone on far to long.

What's going to happen now is the democrats are going to say "hey, we brought two bills to McConnell that would reopen the government and he refused to bring them to the floor of the senate for a vote because the president would not sign them". Now if I'm a voter, I'm going to to say why didn't he at least give the senate a chance to vote on it anyhow since the president could always change his mind? I think that, with the exception of his core base, his support will continue to erode among the rest of the voters.

I think what they need to do is pass a bill to reopen the government without addressing the wall and DACA and make those two a separate issue which at least allows the government to continue to function and leaves open a window of opportunity for both democrats and republicans to come to an agreement on the outstanding issue. IMO I think that is pretty reasonable.

Think 3rd party for 2024 folks. Clean up America.

Once I tell you that we agree to disagree there will be no more discussion between us in the thread so please don't waste your time continuing to argue your points because I will not respond.

Trump isn't going to be screwed like Reagan. The Dems would get what they want and the wall will be set aside. It's time for the wall or no deal.

Fortunately, you are not in a position to do your damage.
Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

maybe I'm being over confident, but If Trump doesn't get his wall, then the democrats don't get DACA and I think both want what they want, so if they can compromise they each get what they want to some degree.
