Perhaps, but the sentiment regarding forced assimilation is still very raw and very political. Most of those kids were physically and sexually abused in the residential school system which didn't end until the 1960's and its legacy is reflected in the disintegration of families, substance abuse, sexual abuse and poverty in the indigenous communities - IOW a very high level of dysfunction.
