Per the OP there are people getting ill from chemical plumes resulting from toxic waste containing things like trichloroethene. That waste didn't put itself in the ground - it doesn't occur naturally. Case in point regarding the pollution in Johnson County, Indiana. The Webb Wellfield consisted of three municipal wells in the town of Franklin that supplemented the municipal water supply for Johnson County. Unfortunately, the Franklin Power Products/Amphenol site is or was located along Hurricane Creek, separated from the Webb Wellfield by a small tree line. The plume of TCE, PCE and DCE have been migrating from Franklin Power into the Wellfield for years. The Indiana American Water Company discovered high levels of DCE contamination in three wells in 2006. According to the water company, the plume of chemical contaminants began migrating 10 years prior.
