The concept of that kind of ash cloud is certainly worrisome, anyone remember when Mt. St. Helens blew, and a news guy said, "if you were planning on visiting Mt. St. Helens, don't worry, it will be visiting you."

This is one of the things I argue about with the climate changers. There is no way to halt the natural progression of the planet. Most scientist agree with that assessment of destruction. It would not be a good thing and would reduce the population by about 1/4 or more here in this country alone. It has happened before, and it will happen again.

That is a crap ton of climate change. You think if we put up a ton of windmills and ban cars that will stop the eruption?

This is the kind of thing that puts us in our place. We can sit around and act like we are in control of the climate or the planet when clearly we are not! There is only one God and his name is not Obama!

The worst case scenario would be total global human annihilation under several feet of ash. On the plus side, that would give paleontologists a million years in the future a ton of stuff to dig up and study.

    Oh wait a minute ...

Great, we cold then invade south, take over Central America and sip cool drinks on a Panamanian beach.

It would be very bad, but I don't think it would be an extinction level event.

in a worst case scenario, it could be. Consider the Domino Effect. Something the size of Yellowstone would pollute the oceans and water supply, not just the land.
Fighting for resources would be in the middle of all of it. Nothing lasts forever, and that includes Man.

If it was my call, I'd suggest doing a thorough geological search for the weakest point -- the spot where an eruption is most likely to occur, and then nuking the $#@! out of it (after the region is evacuated, of course). That would be a lot safer for drilling rigs and their crews, and it might cool off a lot faster if a lot of magma would be flying through the air for awhile.

If YNP gets wiped out in the process, well, we still have that other park down the road -- Craters of the Moon, I think it's called. It's sort of what YNP might look like a million years after the big boil gets lanced.
Ah, Craters of the Moon. Hot day to climb cinder cones, and then I slipped on the icy floor of Boy Scout Cave. Craters of tge Moon was in the desert. Yellowstone was nice and green.
