Russia has always taken the long view and to mistake that for lack of ambition is foolhardy, imo.

True, although not as long of a view as China.

Russia is weak economically. It has serious demographic issues. The only thing that makes it a world power is its strategic nuclear stockpile. Outside of that, it is a regional power fighting to maintain relevance.

Traditionally, economic weakness and serious demographic issues are two excellent reasons for a dictatorship to wage a war of aggression.

I don't believe that they consider themselves to be "a regional power struggling for relevancy", whether that is the reality of their situation or not.

You are right, falling powers tend to lash out.

I do think, however, that Putin is a realist and fully understands the position Russia is in.

    Australia?

The US is the only nation in the history of humanity that can project military force at will and sustain it, anywhere on earth.

Austrian couldn't defeat Indonesia and it is next door.

We get on quite well with Indo thanks....very good diplomatic relations and social and cultural exchange both ways . We have no interest or inclination to have any sort of war with them . Actually , they are one of our major trading partners , as is China Japan and India . It's how the world works . I think that will increase substantially when the new Silk Road trading routes are opened and functioning......15% to 20% increase in global trade , according to projections . Sooner or later , the US will have to face reality. American influence globally is in decline , and it's internal problems that are the cause . Thank fully the future is no longer dictated by America and the economy of endless wars.
