Nicolai Fechin - Eya in Peasant Blouse

Eya was Nicolai Fechin's daughter. I knew her quite well. She passed away in 2002 at the age of 88.

Walter Ufer: Builders of the desert

    builders of the desert.jpg
This has always been a particular favorite of mine for a couple of reasons. 1st, during this period he was really getting into dynamic symmetry and it got just a little out of hand here and 2nd, because he was one of the few artists of the time who actually portrayed Indians engaging in work/industry. For a little context, this is a representation of Pueblo Indians from Taos making adobe bricks to be used in building a house for Mable Dodge Lujan in Taos. For you Georgia O’Keeffe fans out there, the cross in the background is in front of an old Morada and was featured in two of her paintings, Black Cross and Grey Cross with Blue.

Sharp bought a house in Taos adjacent to the Irving Couse property and purchased a small chapel from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe to use as a studio. He later built a larger studio and the chapel was used for storage. The Couse-Sharp foundation has spent a lot of time and money in the last few years renovating his studios and they recently received a sizeable grant to allow them to purchase the old Mission gallery in Taos along with an adjacent property for a Taos Society of Artists archive, research center, gallery and exhibit space.
