God Himself probably wouldn't have a base of more than about 10%.

Politics for some time has been all about personality. As long as the people focus on the presidency instead of Congress, it'll remain that way.

Yes, there are some people who qualify as Trump cultists.
Virtually all major political leaders develop some kind of cult following.
The US presidency in general has developed a cult of its own.
The US obsession with presidents is actually anti-republican.
Thomas Jefferson made it a point to diminish the importance of the presidency while he was in office.
He ran his White House very informally. He would show up to greet guests in person, often wearing his slippers. He had no seating arrangements at White House dinners. He did away with much of the pomp and ceremony of the presidency. But once the US transitioned into an overseas empire during the late 1800's, the presidency required a new infusion of cultish rituals and slathering. And now figures like Lincoln and FDR have been canonized for their big government interventionism and totalitarianism.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.
--John Adams
“Conscientiously believing that the proper condition of the negro is slavery, or a complete subjection to the white man, and entertaining the belief that the day is not distant when the old Union will be restored with slavery nationally declared to be the proper condition of all of African descent, and in view of the future harmony and progress of all the States of America, I have been induced to issue this address, so that there may be no misunderstanding in the future”
