I spoke with Robert Knott a couple of nights ago - he's appeared in many films over the years, but he's mainly a writer-producer these days - and we talked about a film he wrote and co-produced with his friend Ed Harris, called Appaloosa. Largely on the basis of his having written that screenplay, Knott was chosen by the Robert B. Parker estate to continue the Hitch and Cole series of novels that Parker started. Great stuff. Anyway, he said that Ed Harris would love to do more Hitch and Cole films, but Viggo Mortensen is probably not going to be interested.

Knott is pessimistic about the return of the western as an important movie genre, and he may be right. The few "big" westerns I've seen in recent years seem, more than anything, like excuses for a lot of guns going off and heads exploding in a spray of blood. I'm hoping that writer-director Taylor Sheridan (Sicarrio, Hell or High Water, Wind River, 'Yellowstone') does something in the Western vein on the big screen sometime soon. I think, from watching Hell or High Water - which is sort of a Western - and the series 'Yellowstone' with Kevin Costner on the Paramount network, that Sheridan has a real feel for it.

I own Appaloosa, a very fine flick!

I just discovered it last year. Ed Harris seems to have a real affinity for Western movies - he's made a few more that I want to see. The man is one of the most talented actors working today; he plays really good guys and really bad guys with absolute conviction and authority. I didn't watch it when it was on, but I may even go back and watch 'Westworld' (the t.v. series) because I've heard that he was excellent in that.
