Mine is an 1895GBL, but I wouldn't mind getting the 1895 Trapper. You mentioned yours was stainless. Is that the one you have? I know they make a couple of other variants in stainless, as well. Any of them would be excellent rifles.

An interesting point about the .45-70... The .458 SOCOM is actually an offshoot of that cartridge. Members of the Special Operation Community were looking for a round that hit as hard as the .45-70 but could be fired from an AR platform. That request led to the development of the .458 SOCOM.

Have you figured out what load you prefer in that cannon. Most of the time, I run Hornady 325 grain polymer tipped ammo that produces a little over 3000 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle, but if you really want to make sure that what you shoot is going to stay dead, load it up with Buffalo Bore ammo. They have loads that will produce greater than 3600 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle. The Buffalo Bore rounds are over pressured and not safe for use in all guns, but your 1895 will eat them like candy.
45-70. I first became interested when I saw Jeremy Renner's character use it in the movie "Wind River". It's an 1895GS. I bought a variety of ammo, mostly for hunting, but a few boxes of solid nose in case I feel the need to shoot an engine block.

The GS is a nice rifle. Good choice.

Wind River is a good movie. I got a kick out the fact that he used a .45-70, but it fit the character well.

Ranges vary. Most of the moving targets appear to be about 10 meters away from the firing position. The warehouse ranges have popup targets (human) ranging from 5 to about 30 meters. Some have hostages used as shields.

The action scenarios, indoors and outdoors also range from very close (3 meters) to very far away (50 meters).
Do the programs you use have specific shooting drills or are they more like combat scenarios?
There are different frameworks. One framework involves bullseye targets on a moving frame. One has a rectangular frame where the bullseye targets pop forward randomly across a 10 x 5 area. One has triangular arms that rotate and twist at the same time. One has wheels within wheels.

Another framework is a warehouse interior with multiple levels. The shooting position may be high or low. The popup human targets appear at a wide variety of ranges from very near to very far away on all levels. Some have one popup at a time and others have several. Some are stationary and others move.

The outside scenarios are combat scenarios. They use WWII as white national socialists are acceptable villains. All of the outdoor WWII combat scenes take place in winter.

I like the zombie scenarios (warehouse and WWII). All zombies move toward the shooter at varying rates. In some cases, as many as twenty zombies are within view at any moment. All scenarios can occur during the day or at night.

There is a sandbox warehouse where one can build scenarios.

    ...
Just a recommendation... don't worry about counting rounds. It is an unnecessary distraction. Either shoot until the slide locks back and do a speed (combat) reload or when you have a lull in the action, do a tactical reload to top off.
In real life, I don't. For game purposes, one gets a higher score for a perfect reload.
Weak hand shooting is an important skill that is neglected way too often. Good on you.
yep. It has always been important. I could not figure out how to move the magazine pouch from one hip to the other. The software team had thought of it and had a way to do it.
Even without tremors, you would want to shoot center mass of the target presented. Surgical shots are best left to the movies.
Tremors are normal oscillations. I cannot control them but I can understand them. For zombies, one headshot destroys the zombie. It takes 4-6 chest shots to do the same. When I begin shooting my tremor oscillations are small. After ten minutes of drills the oscillations are big enough to miss a chest shot. The oscillations are more or less smooth. I can estimate when the sight picture will return to center of mass. It is hard to do on the head shots but easy to do on chest shots.
It sounds like you know what you need to train on and are taking advantage of technology to help you do it. That is great. I hope you still have opportunities to get to a live fire range from time to time, but when you can't, it sounds like you may have found the next best thing.
We have two nearby indoor ranges. I will return to the closest one after we sell the house and move.
I almost forgot to ask, what do you hold in your hand when you are using that device. Is it a G17 mock up or something different?
Oculus Rift has two hand controllers. The controllers vibrate to reflect the feedback from the handgun. I saw a sensor package for an AR15. I believe there are people working on a general sensor to apply to any real handgun.

Every year we get closer to life experiences.

The VR Gun Club has about 20 different basic pistols and revolvers along with a variety of long guns. I have tried six different pistols and one revolver. The rifles don't feel right so I don't play them.

Today I started with the Glock 17. After warming up I switched to the M9 shooting over iron sights. My accuracy is not as good with the M9. I have more trouble maintaining a good sight picture. I think having white dots would help me.

While digging around the settings to see if I could adjust the sights I found an achievement. I have yet to throw any grenades. If I use a grenade to destroy the last target I can win the achievement. There is also one for killing the last target with a knife.

After the range, I moved on to a new maze game. I like it. Unfortunately, it stalled. So I will reboot my machine and try another time. The people who made the game have the right idea. They offer what they call Chapter One for free. It is two to three hours of gameplay. Additional chapters may be purchased for a reasonable fee. They also offer hints for purchase in the game. Again, it is a good idea.

Today I will be working with the VR Gun Club Team. The simulation has a sandbox. I am going to build a scenario and then save it as a preset. I proposed that the Team provide several loadable presets so we have examples.
