Democrats should tread carefully when talking about a "Medicare for all" framework that eliminates the role of private insurers, according to one potential 2020 candidate.

"Remember when President Obama said, 'If you like your insurance, you can keep your insurance,'" Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., said Sunday during an interview on NBC's "Meet to Press." "And then a few people in America actually lost their insurance because of the way that the plan worked. Now what Democrats are saying is, 'If you like your insurance, we're going to take it away from you,' from 180 million people that get their insurance from their employer and like it, where 20 million Americans who are on Medicare Advantage, and love it. That seems like a bad opening offer for me."


A better starting point, Bennet said, was his "Medicare X" proposal with Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., which creates a public option.



"It helps finish the work of Obamacare, and it says to America, 'If you want to be in a public plan, you can choose to be in a public plan. If you want to keep your insurance, you can keep your insurance,'" the two-term senator said.

A renewed conversation over private insurance began when presidential contender Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif, called for the elimination of private health insurance during a CNN town hall last month.


"The idea is that everyone gets access to medical care and you don't have to go through the process of going through an insurance company, having them give you approval, going through all the paperwork, all of the delay that may require," Harris said. "Who of all us have not had that situation where you have to wait for approval and the doctor says, 'I don't know if your insurance company is going to cover this.'"


“Let’s eliminate all of that,” she added. “Let’s move on.”

I've never been a big fan of private insurance because I feel they are nothing more then death panels. Prior to Obamacare, they decided whether or not to offer you insurance and if you had a pre-existing condition the chances were they would not insure you or anything related to the pre-existing condition would not be covered. If you were lucky enough to be offered insurance the premiums were so astronomically high many people couldn't afford to pay for it. So people did without and many ended up dying of conditions where if treated, they could have survived. I do not feel sorry for the private insurance industry whatsoever; this has been a long time coming.

Yes, at this stage i'm willing to let the government have a shot at it. At least everyone would have medical insurance whether it be private sector or government. The government isn't in it to make money; the private sector is all about money and nothing else. Just my opinion.

You need to take a look at the V.A., an indepth look. The government can't even handle that let alone the entire country.

The government isn't in it to make money. But they are in it to take money. Lots of money. As much as you can stand.

Why is no one saying the most obvious solution? We need a wall of separation between government and the private sector. The federal government has no role to play whatsoever in the private sector. Check your Constitution. You will find no authority for the federal government to intrude into private businesses.

If I had any complaints it would be (1) some non essential procedures take forever to see a specialist (2) they are quick to give away devices that could be quite expensive.

Other than that I have been very pleased with the service I received from both the facility in Asheville NC and Gainesville FL

Government bureaucrats have incentives to lie. They willingly let people die while waiting for care.

Well that's good to know there are some facilities that are doing what they can. But now Chicago's is a different story.
