While maybe not an answer per say it is a valid point, we have systems in this country to help people that need help at the local state and federal level, BUT these systems were designed to be a helping hand, not a hand out. The problem is that these systems have been abused and cheated by both the people they were designed to help and the provides that are supposed to help.
Lets look at Medicaid, "Medicaid is a joint federal and state program that, together with the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), provides health coverage to over 72.5 million Americans, including children, pregnant women, parents, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Medicaid is the single largest source of health coverage in the United States. "
Then we have Medicare; "Medicare is the federal health insurance program for: People who are 65 or older, Certain younger people with disabilities, People with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant, sometimes called ESRD)"
Both systems set up with good intentions to help the needy both have become abused to a point that it is hard to fathom. https://oig.hhs.gov/oei/reports/oei-09-18-00180.pdf
In 2017 the Gov't recovered nearly $2 billion in Fraud Cases, sounds great right? but that is a drop in the bucket of the estimated $50-60 Billion (some sources have it closer to 150) of fraud that is estimated each year.
Then add in $36.7 billion in Medicaid payment errors tied to poor oversight the same year https://www.healthcareitnews.com/new...nal-repository
The payment error rate runs about 10%
Medicare error rates cost taxpayers even more with $31 billion of their own errors and nearly $50 billion in fraud.
People who need a helping hand should get one, but there should be limits and there should be tight controls. I have worked hard my entire life to provide for my self and family, if you do that and fall on hard times then I am all about helping pick you back up. But too many are not willing to work for what they want, they just want you and me to give it to them. Sorry but that system will not work.
"The powers of the federal government are enumerated; it can only operate in certain cases; it has legislative powers on defined and limited objects, beyond which it cannot extend its jurisdiction." James Madison 1788

Fraud is a serious problem and I think those who are caught need to pay a heavy price for stealing from the taxpayers and I'm not just talking about a heavy fine; I'm talking serious jail time without possibility of parole as a deterrent to others who may contemplate stealing from the government. Collecting 2 billion dollars is a drop in the bucket, but its a start and perhaps the government ought to increase it's anti-fraud staff to track down those who are ripping off the system.
That being said, some people, such as myself, have worked our entire lives and paid the max into the system, so if the time comes where I need medicare or disability I expect to receive it as opposed being thrown under the bus by those who might be very young and in good health and try to tell me that it's not their job to support me with their tax dollars. My tax dollars may have supported their parents and I never once complained since I understood the importance of having a safety net.

Why are the dems considering eliminating private insurance. Most nations that have single payer still have private insurance to either supplement or complement the government program.
