Seriously cut the onion in half and then cut the halfs into. Let it sit for around 10 minutes to let out the gasses and you should be fine. Yes you can also use the refrig.

You could just wear safety glasses. I find that if I just wear reading glasses, the fumes don't irritate my eyes and my eyes get irritated fairly easily.
