    Prolong your pet's life.

Life ending organ failure and terminal diseases with attendant hefty vet bills start with bacterias and other infections in the mouth that don't get regularly removed. They eventually spread into the body. These are easy to overlook but also pretty easy to combat. Coconut oil and enzymatic toothpastes work well for this.

Your pet's breath will tell you if you need to attend to their teeth and mouth, and it's important that you do. Bad breath indicates trouble is brewing.e4e4e4e4e4e4e4e4e4e4e4e4e4e4e4e4

(My cat agrees, but she's a bad typist.)

I bought my cats toothbrushes for Christmas. They aren't too bad so far, and I should have started doing it when they were kittens. I still have to work up the nerve to ruin their day, but the intent is there.

Something else that a lot of people do not know is that certain "essential oils" (all the rage) are very poisonous to pets.

My cats will be 2 this Summer. They will get their first basic dental cleaning probably in June. I'll do it every 12 to 18 months from then on. The possibility of them allowing me to brush their teeth is slim. Not even going to try.

My one cat is very laid back and too cool for school (he would have a handlebar mustache if he could), so I think he will take it well. My other one is a high-strung screamer with anxiety issues which... if it weren't for his squirming, the screaming part may be advantageous for brushing his teeth.

    Agree. Good points.

On the downside is that getting a dental exam/cleaning/treatment at the vet for the dog is rather expensive. $400-$600 depending on how things go.

For a lot of people that isn't an expense which is easy to absorb.

Coconut oil is the best teeth cleaner I know. If you don't believe that, brush your own teeth with it sometime. I melt a small amount of coconut oil in a spoon once in awhile and mix it in with my cat's food. She is not fond of it but she will eat it.

Coconut oil is no doubt very hard to get out of plumbing and the sewer (like paraffin would be, I think). I try not to send it down the drain but toss it into a paper towel and into the garbage for the landfill.

My cat was a companion for my dog, who died of old age a couple years ago, RIP. She too is old, and will live out her life here comfortably. But I will never get another cat, and am not particularly fond of them. One does not bond with a cat like one does with a dog, I think.

Let them lick a few times a day at the tube opening of enzymatic toothpaste. They do swirl some of that around in their mouths.

My wife and I have tried brushing our dogs teeth time and time again, but he's afraid of the toothbrush and heads for the hills once he see's it. While it's expensive, we let the vet knock him out and clean his teeth.

Once I tell you that we agree to disagree there will be no more discussion between us in the thread so please don't waste your time continuing to argue your points because I will not respond.
