Could This Mystery Mustang Hidden in Hawaii Be a Shelby G.T. 350 or California Special?
The story is a familiar one. Out-of-town job opportunity forces owner to leave behind his prized muscle car in his parents' garage. The years go by, and the half-dismantled Mustang becomes less and less of a priority. Eventually the parents decide to sell the home, but escrow is contingent upon the removal of the car. Finding himself between a proverbial rock and a hard spot, the seller is forced to put a low number on the car in order to move it quickly. This is where the hero of our story comes in.
Big Island speed shop owner David Ignacio's heart raced when he learned through the "coconut wireless" about an original-owner 1968 Mustang coupe that was for sale in nearby Country Club Estates, especially once the words Shelby and California Special were uttered. David immediately went to check out the car.
"The car had the correct Thunderbird/Shelby G.T. 350 sequential taillights on the back, and the rear quarter scoops were also there," he says. "The coupe's front grille featured the square halogen driving lights indicative of Mustang GT/CS cars. Its dual-carbureted small-block Ford V-8 was covered in layers of oil-soaked dirt, and its born with four-speed transmission was still with the car."
