While your sister's employment history is no doubt fascinating, I don't see any relevance.

I looked at a sampling of teacher's salaries in Ohio. I wouldn't describe even the high end of what I saw as *good money*, perhaps barely adequate money, but not good money. I realize it's a cheap place to live,m but it can't be that cheap.

You get what you pay for.

Clearly we have not attracted the best and brightest to the area of education.
That was my point. They came to college already in that condition.

The fact is that an awful lot of teachers in this country have salaries so low that they have to work second and even third jobs on the side just to stay financially above water.

Further, it's not simply the needs of teachers themselves for whom these educators are striking. The improved working conditions they have insisted on will benefit their students as well, which is why most of their students support them.
Educators need a profit motive. We need a wall of separation between government and education.

Teachers need to be rated, retained and paid based on the merits of their students. If a teacher fails to teach effectively, they should be told to find another line of work.
There exists a significant teacher shortage in this country and it's NOT because we spoil our educators.

The only way to do well financially in education is to work in the school district offices or to be a principal. IMO we pay paper shufflers too much and teachers too little.

It's because the best and brightest are not going into teaching. It's not just because of teacher pay either.

When I was growing up, the quality of those who were in the teaching profession went down over the years.

Some teachers are basically worthless and getting paid too much. Many should be doing something else for a living.

So do millions of other Americans. So what?

That would be a valid approach. Base their pay on the quality of the product they produce.
