    I remember that, but it wasn’t really a “controversy”. They weren’t ever taken seriously music-wise. I remember the first album they released where they supposedly played all of the music themselves.

    Still their show was just carefree off beat humor. Back then the entertainment tried to briefly take prople’s mind off the issues surrounding the war in Vietnam and the fallout from that.

    They took heat for being a Hollywood fabrication of a pop rock band, which they were, but they were also talented and put out some good songs. As you said, the show was carefree and humorous. Lord knows we needed some of that in the late 60s. 1968 was a bad year.
