They Really Make D2C Everything These Days. Birth control, bespoke suits, bicycles…and now, the Academy Awards. Tomorrow’s Oscars, which have cut out the middleman (the host), are shining a light on just how dramatically direct-to-consumer streaming is flipping Hollywood on its extraordinarily well-groomed head. By now you’ve probably heard the Roma hype. Netflix’s first Best Picture hopeful is the category frontrunner—figures as much after the streamer dished out a rumored $25 million on its campaign (plus, it’s an amazing movie). But beyond that fat check, Roma’s pole position shows just how quickly the new guard (streamers) is coming for the old guard (…not streamers).
