Throughout all of history and in almost every society there have been men who lived as women. My first exposure to the practice was from a book about the Indian wars beginning in the late 1600s. The Indian tribes allowed any man unwilling to be a warrior to wear a squaw's clothes and do squaw's work. Any man who chose this way was no longer considered to be a man and did not have to meet manly obligations.
