    Karen Carpenter

Its been many years since she passed. To this day it still bothers me everytime I see her or hear her music. Its hard to imagine the strength of the storms within her that drove her anorexia resulting in her demise. I'm so sorry for what you endured Karen. The only upside is that it did bring attention to anorexia in the psychiatric community and certainly saved lives afterwards.

I didn't know she was anorexic, but society puts too much emphasis on being skinny. I judged gymnastics for a few years, and I heard all sorts of stories about little girls with bulimia -- trying to keep their weight down.

    Sad.

There is a lot of preoccupation with the superficial. Its not emotionally healthy.

Well, wait a minute, if 70 percent of the U.S. population is either overweight or obese how can it be said that too much emphasis is being put on being skinny?

Around 1980 a large long-term health study was started in Okinawa Japan. The study went on for 25 years and they found that Okinawans were very healthy and long-lived partly because they were practicing a form of calorie restriction. Their tradition is to eat until you are 80 percent full, then you stop. The result of the calorie restriction is that all Okinawans were very lean. And perhaps they still are, unless the fast food industry has increased their business since then.

All the emphasis on calorie restriction and leanness did not cause Okinawans to have a problem with anorexia.
