STRATFOR has published its take on the presidential tweet. They say that it is a departure from international law as it relates to the borders of States. Since WWII the International community has agreed that States cannot be allowed to expand their borders for strategic reasons. Changes in borders must be agreed to bilaterally.
I disagree with STRATFOR in this case because Israel did not start a war with Arab nations to expand its territory. Israel was targeted for complete destruction by Syria, et. al. Israel, against the odds, won. The Golan Heights is a vital strategic location and without it, Israel's defensive posture is greatly weakened. IOW, if Syria held Golan, they could very likely beat Israel in war. Thus, Israel would be insane to give that strategic land back to Syria.
