That is the main problem; many criminals come from broken homes (government's fault with welfare programs as run). They lack basic societal skills. They can learn those in prison if the programs are made available.

Generally, for the majority once they're in prison it's too late.

When they are beyond the age where you can really change them, not much unless they want to change When they are teens, they are are still malleable. Most of those incarcerated began when they were still teens, who we recognize don't have fully developed brains. In the absence of any form of responsible parenting, these kids are being parented by opportunistic criminals with a nihilistic attitude to life. p

Since Rodents recognize that teens don't have fully developed brains, explain why they want to drop the voting age to sixteen. Remember that we already know the correct answer.

Today you can't even try to teach acceptable behaviors because someone will claim you are trying to force certain values upon everyone.

The best way to disincentivise criminal behavior is to punish criminals swiftly with appropriate severity and make it public knowledge.

Up to and including capital punishment.

There is an entire segment of society that is just grist for the mill where social programs are more for show than for effectiveness. Realistically the system is also bound by laws that don't help but hinder better methods. The history of reform schools is so dysfunctional that no one wants to go there again even if we are better able now than then to address the issues. However, if we don't soon decide to address these issues the percentage of the population in prison will simply continue to increase, particularly as those with the least transferrable skills and education are shut out of employment.

The purpose of EVERY social program is votes. NONE of them are intended to help anyone.

I disagree and the statistics don't prove that your theory is correct. You are dealing with a nihilistic attitude. They don't believe that they have any other choices nor do they believe that they will enjoy a long life.

The correct way to deal with nihilism is to tell them that since they don't care, we don't care, and order them to stand against the wall will all the bullet scars.

If we would just provide these people with all their wants and needs, they wouldn't need to commit robberies and other such violent crimes. After all they are criminals out of need.

Well said. Unfortunately, that would cut into prison guard jobs and inmate slave labor. Whole small towns would vanish.
On the topic of the thread, I heard a story once....
A guy was getting sentenced by a judge, and the judge said, "I sentence you to 20 years!". The defendant spoke up, "20 years? I can do that standing on my head!". "Is that right?", said the judge, "Well I'll give you another 20 years to get you back on your feet!". LOL

Did you see where Camel's Ass Harris, when she was AG of California, argued against early inmate release on the grounds that local economies would be harmed by the loss of the low-wage prison labor?

Obviously some people can look at the facts on this one. Their prejudice against any type of authority is clouding their ability to look at this factually.


The guy was on parole when he committed his latest criminal escapade for crying out loud. But that irrelevant?


Prison is probably the best place for him to be.

22 years would have been plenty of time for self evaluation. He legally was within his right to add the 6 years, but it's fairly obvious that he did so because of his God complex. Total ego and power trip.

Use non prescribed drugs other than booze and tobacco go to jail. Possibly due to federal drug laws which in many cases are unconstitutional consenting adults exchange money for sex, BOTH go in the system. Although if you are rich ( Craft) you , not the cops, control the process. We have a wide range of potential sentencing to fuel differential enforcement.
The prison state America has become serves many benefits for the government. First, it grows government, but additionally it decreases "unemployment" numbers. Provides government controlled employment from cops, to maintenance workers to probation, mandated counseling, court employees, lawyers. we need more of all of these things because we are the most incarcerated society on earth
