CA Senate passes bill to ban captivity of whales, dolphins

After a multi-year legislative battle, a bill to outlaw keeping cetaceans like whales and dolphins in captivity has cleared the Senate — all but ensuring the end of a once-popular theme park attraction in Canada.

S-203 — first introduced by now-retired Liberal senator Wilfred Moore in December 2015, with the backing of Green Party Leader Elizabeth May — would ban keeping and breeding these marine mammals in captivity through amendments to the Criminal Code.

Fines of up to $200,000 could be imposed on parks flouting the law — a sum set deliberately high as a deterrent.

The bill finally cleared the Red Chamber Tuesday night after nearly three years of debate and study. It now will be shuttled through the House of Commons by May.

This seems like a good step towards in terms of how we treat animals. I do not support zoos in general, but I understand why some people think they should exist. I just do not think it is reasonable or healthy or humane to keep certain types of creatures that would normally cover vast areas of the sea (or land) in a small box, and then add insult to injury by training them like show ponies.

I look forward to the unintended consequences.

Didn't Willy die because he couldn't make it on the outside or something?

Zoos in this country aren't nearly as inhumane as they once were because people have come to appreciate and love the animals, partly because of zoos.

Reminds of a early 1900s film on youtube of a public electrocution of an elephant for the simple interest in viewing it.

That wouldn't occur now, at least here.

Yeah. On balance, zoos are way on the positive side.

Ultimately this can really hurt animals, but I know "Sea World is bad"
SeaWorld has the largest and one of the most advanced rescue programs in the United States.
And guess what? It’s all out of pocket. SeaWorld has rescued over 24,000 animals, more than any other animal rescue organization in the United States (and about 24,000 more than PETA ever rescued). Since their very first manatee rescue in 1976, SeaWorld has been on the front lines of rescue and rehabilitation, racking up mammal, bird and reptile rehab like nobody’s business. Their rescue teams are ready for the NOAA call 24/7, including weekends, holidays, (and other times when keyboard activists take a break from “helping” animals to curl up with their pumpkin spice lattes and binge-watch Mad Men.) And each one of those rescues is company funded. No catch, just conservation.

But I am sure when they put them out of business someone will take over
"The powers of the federal government are enumerated; it can only operate in certain cases; it has legislative powers on defined and limited objects, beyond which it cannot extend its jurisdiction." James Madison 1788
