High potency pot 'strongly linked' to psychosis

High potency cannabis, especially when used daily, is "strongly linked" to the risk of developing psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and paranoia, scientists said Wednesday.

In Amsterdam and London—where high-THC marijuana has long been the rule rather than the exception—50 and 30 percent of new psychosis cases, respectively, were associated with potent forms of the drug.

The findings, reported The Lancet, bolster a growing body of research connecting pot to a range of mental health disorders.

With piecemeal legalisation and decriminalisation, consumption in North America and Europe has increased markedly over the last two decades, even as levels of the drug's mind-bending molecule, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), have risen four- or five-fold.

"The use of cannabis with a high concentration of THC has more harmful effects on mental health than the use of weaker forms," said lead author Marta Di Forti, a professor at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London.

Our findings also indicate for the first time how cannabis use affects the incidence of psychotic disorder at a population level."

Across 11 European cities or regions, and a 12th in Brazil, one in five new cases of psychosis were associated to daily cannabis use, and one in ten to high potency pot, the study found

Almost any drug can be over concentrated. Imagine mainlining caffine?. But do not actually do it. Cocaine? In the form of chewed leaves was like a few cups of coffee for the Indians as they worked. Take the active ingredient and purify it to a high degree and you essentially have a different drug. Take alcohol for example. Daily consumption of a quart of white lighting can $#@! you up immediately if not sooner, while daily consumption of a quart of beer will, on average, take longer to mess up your life. Even occasional use of large amounts of the former will be dangerous while small amounts of beer once a week probably is not. Also when legal the potency and risk should be known to the user.

Haven't you posted this study before, and wasn't it pointed out then that there was no way to tell if this was a chicken/egg scenario?

This whole canard is BS anyways. While hybrid strains may have gotten stronger, there have always been concentrated forms of THC available. Hash, hash oil, etc.

Quite possible. He is over the top anti-pot for some reason. But oddly OK with booze.

People should take this study seriously. It seems as this is a credible study which was conducted in an objective manner. They didn't start with a conclusion looking to justify it.

Again, you don't have to get the strongest pot on the market anymore than you have to drink straight whiskey. Obviously increasing the concentration of the active chemical in any drug is going to change the effects. We have "wet brains" but we still sell alcohol, fir example

The continued comparison with alcohol is a diversion. There's more and more evidence being uncovered that daily use of marijuana is extremely risky to one's mental health. Much more risky than previously believed. You can either deny those risks or take it seriously. I think it's prudent to take it seriously.

Please detail the steps taken in the study to determine if the test subjects weren't predisposed to mental health issues in the first place.

After you tell me me why it would be prudent to ignore this study? We learn more and more about certain things over time. Smart people take this stuff seriously.
