Well movies are obviously being made with a profit margin in mind very often and that's precisely what I'm complaining about here: that commercial considerations too often get in the way of what filmmakers (and other artists for that matter) actually want to share with us.
As to your speculation, like I said before, I find the possibility that this particular case isn't one of lesbian coding to be exceedingly unlikely. I don't know know about you, but when I see two people raising a child together, my mind says "couple", not "friends", especially if neither of them has another partner. It's therefore absurd that they are friend zoned in this movie.
