When I was younger and many years before terrorists threats people could go to a road just east of Stapleton International Airport just below where planes came in to land. They flew just over 100 feet or so above you. It was pretty cool.
In 1969 I was on a destroyer doing plane guard duties at Yankee Station for either the U.S.S. Enterprise or U.S.S Bonhomme Richard. On a Sunday afternoon after 1300 hours they often gave us the afternoon off unless you had a watch to stand. I was bored and kind of home sick and went up to the tip of the bow (like Jack and Rose) staring down at the water which was very clear. Seemed like you could see down a long way before it started to get dark. All of a sudden it was like the world was ending. I hit the deck. When I looked up there was a squadron of F-4 Phantoms disappearing into the distance trailing black smoke. Those A- holes got a kick out of buzzing ships flying a couple hundred feet above the water. I'm not sure if they were flying supersonic or the noise of 4 jets make enough noise to make you think they are but I never heard or saw them coming so they had to be flying very fast. They passed just in front of the ship from my right to my left. After the terror faded I thought "Damn, that was cool."
When those carriers were doing flight operations they'd have jets taking off and landing pretty much 24 hours a day with an AWAC always in the sky. It was awesome.
