Taiwan mulls death penalty for drunk driving

In the 1970's or 80's there was a push to increase the penalties for drunk driving in the United States, modeled on the laws in Norway. The upshot was fewer drunk driving tickets were written, not because the law was effective and there were fewer drunks on the highway but because the police and prosecutors were reluctant to enforce the law because of their draconian nature. The same was true with those of Norway. My prediction is the laws in Taiwan will not be enforced in most cases. Instead of being found to be drunk the driver will be cited for some other crime that will allow for a lower penalty.

Not all police and courts find great pleasure in taking a mans life for an act that while avoidable was still an accident.

Actually I think the law, along with education and treatment did work. Far less DWI fatalities than there were back then. It did not require a death sentence. However, if we take your licence and you still won't stop drinking and driving you need to be in jail or prison to protect society.
Just like other drugs. The drug should be legal, but putting people in harm's way under it's influence should not be.
