It's powerful to see trans-identified people start to question their transgender identity after viewing this material and get lots of support. It shows you this material and community do, in fact, resonate in potentially life-defining ways for some.

Transgender politics definitely aren't feminist ideas. In point of fact, back in the 1970s they were popularly characterized as an alternative to feminism! In the words of one newspaper from the late 1970s on the subject, for example, transition surgery is "living proof that feminism isn't necessary." One of the things that has changed since then is that one of these movements has largely capitulated to the other.

In 1977, responding in part to that article, for example, Gloria Steinem, who was sort of the ideological standard-bearer of the women's movement at the time, wrote a rebuttal expressing disapproval of the heavily publicized sex reassignment surgery of tennis player "Renee" Richards, who had sought to compete as a woman at the 1976 U.S. Open. Steinem wrote that, in many cases, transsexuals "surgically mutilate their own bodies" in order to conform to a gender role that is inexorably tied to physical body parts. She continued by arguing that "feminists are right to feel uncomfortable about the need for and uses of transsexualism", and concluded with what became one of her most famous quotes: "If the shoe doesn't fit, must we change the foot?" In 2013, Steinem recanted this view and apologized. That's a microcosm of what has changed in the interim: most feminists have just simply capitulated to what is today called the transgender movement. And that is much of the problem. We need to get back to having a more autonomous women's movement that's focused on our interests as women! But in order to do that, we have to ditch the concept of gender that compels us to see men as women.

But the idea that gender is a social construct imposed on human beings most definitely is. Feminists have capitulated in an effort to maintain what little intellectual coherence the "movement" ever had. It's sad...but kind of funny too.

Women don't have interests. They aren't a class or a social group.
