Unhappy Notre Dame rebuild - thoughts?

The fire and devastation at the Notre Dame Cathedral is very bad. I saw the 300 million dollars pledged by those two families and I was thinking about the rebuild. I have handled scores of fire claims, the largest being about $7,000,000 give or take. This is on another level. It's going to take time to solidify, stabilize, plan, design, raise money, mobilize and then begin construction.

    1. How long do you think it'll take to begin construction? To actually start the rebuild (as opposed to the clear out)?
    2. Projected length of time once work is started?
    3. Projected costs? (I read that the place was in serious disrepair structurally before the fire so it'll have to be rebuilt)

My thoughts are that we won't see any construction before at least 3 years. First we'll have the C&O Investigation. (cause & origin of the fire) Then, imagine planning the new electrical, HVAC, fire-suppression, security, code-upgrades, etc. Imagine the fundraising. Bidding process.

I hope when it does get finalized they keep the original design, this is going to be a massive many year long undertaking. To first clean it out demolish what has to be taken down then start a new.

They rebuilt Windsor castle in 5 years. The damage to Windsor was comparable to Norte Dame.

They're going to have a hard time finding lumber and beams big enough to rebuild the interior structure. Trees like that no longer exist domestically in France.

I would think that they'd go with engineered lumber or steel trusses in the rebuild? Thoughts?

Having been involved in rebuilding the bell tower of a much smaller and younger church (1742), I can tell you that there will be a very strong faction of originalists regarding modern building materials. I suspect they will win out. I don't think any drywall will be involved in the rebuild, either.

Here's an article about what's available to allow the rebuild to be as as accurate/authentic as possible.

Serendipity or the hand of god?

nd so it was that in 2010, Tallon, an art professor at Vassar, took a Leica ScanStation C10 to Notre-Dame and, with the assistance of Columbia’s Paul Blaer, began to painstakingly scan every piece of the structure, inside and out. They mounted the Leica on a tripod, put up markers throughout the space, and set the machine to work. Over five days, they positioned the scanner again and again—50 times in all—to create an unmatched record of the reality of one of the world’s most awe-inspiring buildings, represented as a series of points in space. Tallon also took high-resolution panoramic photos to map onto the three-dimensional forms that the laser scanner could create.

I think you're probably right that there will be a strong originalist school. I can't believe that money will be an issue.

What's your thoughts on the skeleton? Steel? Wood? Engineered wood? It has to hold up that tower.

Also, I was thinking about the upgrades for HVAC, fire suppression, handicapped accessibility, lighting, internet, video, etc. More efficient. Do you build it the same or better? I've never been there but I'm sure there were things about that structure that were awkward, disliked etc. My oldest and her husband are going next Month.

Last night Tucker Carlson asked the question why rebuild it at all? The French have abandoned religion for a secular state. He argues that Notre Dame at this point is nothing more than a tourist attraction.

Pretty controversial, but I get the point

You can always count on him to go for low hanging fruit.

I suspect all over France people are saying, "Who?"

We'll need some underground Knights Templar Free Masons to lend a hand. The kids from Mater Dei can act as gofers and debris clean-up.

You can rebuild it but it will not be the same. Leave it as a ruins. That's what it is,
